Cleaning
It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

According to many studies conducted by IT companies, the keyboard of a laptop can contain 20,000 times more bacteria than the appliances in the bathroom. In this article, we suggest how to clean it effectively.

Whether you’re struggling with crumbs, dust, fingerprints or stains, it’s a good idea to clean your keyboard regularly to avoid dirt that is difficult to remove. What’s more, if you share the device with other household members, you can also prevent the spread of germs this way. Cleaning it will only take you a few minutes during the day and the effect will be immediately visible.

Turn off the device

Before you start, turn off your computer so you don’t short circuit it. Also unplug the charger and any possible plugs to reduce potential damage if moisture gets inside. It’s also a good habit to back up your files, just in case something goes wrong. You can store your data in the online cloud or on external drives.

Get rid of crumbs

To remove the largest crumbs, dust or other debris, turn your laptop upside down and let them fall out freely. Gently tap the bottom of the case to remove any stubborn dirt particles. You can also try gently cleaning the spaces between the keys. If that doesn’t do the trick, you may want to use a vacuum cleaner. Make sure you use a small nozzle and the lowest power setting so you don’t accidentally suck up the keys.

Another option is to use a can of compressed air. Spray the air on the keyboard in such a way that you don’t miss any nooks and crannies. If you don’t have compressed air, you can try another device that blows air (such as a cool air dryer). Experts stress not to use air directly under the keycaps because it can damage the electronics.

What if I still have a lot of dirt?

If you have done all this and you still see dust particles between the keys, then you may need to remove it and clean it again. Unfortunately, this can’t be done on every laptop model by yourself. Sometimes it’s a good idea to go to a professional service that can safely clean the keyboard without breaking or damaging the hardware.

Disinfect the hardware and remove smudges

Once you’ve removed the dirt between the keys, it’s time to clean the surface of the keyboard itself. This will get rid of germs, smudges and any stains. First, wipe everything down thoroughly with a disinfecting wipe. Avoid wipes that contain bleach as they can damage your hardware

You can also use a soft cloth with a little alcohol. Wipe the keys one at a time, as well as the areas between them, to make sure you have access to every spot. Don’t use a wet cloth – if necessary, wring out the wipes before using them.

Remember not to spray water or any cleaning fluids directly on the keyboard. The next step will be to wipe everything down with a slightly damp cloth. It will be best to use a microfiber cloth. If you don’t have one, use an old cotton t-shirt. Try to avoid rough materials such as paper towel. Finally, gently wipe the keyboard with a dry cloth
