When we move out of the family home, we find that we have to do all the chores ourselves. One of them is taking care of the equipment and its maintenance, this also applies to the refrigerator

In order for the refrigerator to properly fulfill its task and serve for many years, we must not only clean it regularly, but also defrost it. This is not a difficult activity, but once in a while it is necessary. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Why is defrosting a fridge so important?

First of all, defrosting the fridge helps us maintain optimal conditions for storing food in it. In this way we can get rid of dirt, sediments from food residues or fat. This keeps the inside of the fridge clean and hygienic

Moreover, regular defrosting of the fridge prolongs the life of the equipment. The ice that accumulates inside puts a strain on its mechanisms, as a result of which it works less efficiently and finds it harder to maintain the right temperature. It also affects the energy resources needed for proper operation. The equation is simple: more frequent defrosting and proper refrigerator maintenance = lower electricity bills.

When should you defrost your fridge?

In most cases, newer No Frost appliances need defrosting on average once every six months. But if you have an older appliance in your kitchen, it’s best to defrost it every 2 months or so. A hint would be to observe the amount of frost that builds up inside the fridge

Refrigerator defrosting step by step

Step 1 – preparations

To properly defrost a refrigerator, we need to prepare it for this. We can do this by using the temperature settings, setting it to 0, and then unplug it. Secure the wires and plugs to prevent water from getting into them. Then remove all the products inside the refrigerator. We recommend that you defrost the fridge before major purchases, when there are fewer items in the fridge

Step 2 – thorough cleaning

Open the fridge and freezer. Remove all shelves and containers, wash them thoroughly with water and detergent or vinegar (it eliminates odors and disinfects surfaces very well) to get rid of all germs and bacteria. Wipe them down thoroughly and set them aside to evaporate – they need to be completely dry before going back inside

Step 3 – defrosting

On average, your refrigerator takes several to several hours to defrost, depending on the amount of ice. There are a few tried and tested ways to speed up the process, although opinions are divided as they have both supporters and opponents. However, we certainly do not recommend scraping and scraping the ice off the walls of the fridge – this can damage the equipment and be dangerous for you as a result. You can, however, put a dish of warm, steaming water inside. Manufacturers also warn against using other appliances such as dryers or heaters to defrost

Step 4 – Cleaning the interior

Finally, thoroughly clean the inside of the refrigerator. However, remember not to close it right away and turn it on. Allow it to dry quietly. Then put all the shelves and containers and enjoy a clean fridge.
